This is an important update regarding our forums.

As we move forward we're having to adapt to cold and hard business realities which aren't necessarily our native mind-space (bootstrapping, manufacturing, payment processing, incorporation, getting cashflow). And now we're slowly coming to terms with another even more unglamorous side of things, the legal one (ouch). We're fortunately not a huge and rigid company so this isn't an overwhelming concern that permeates everything we do. But we do have to make sure we get the important things right.

As you know most of us are extremely technically minded and we're all in the web 2.0 "share, share, share" culture (user generated content, open source, collaborative effort, etc). So our first instinct was, let's create forums and let everyone participate in R&D! And indeed many very good ideas have emerged including many that were already on the to-do list...

It took months but finally we've received this answer from the FCC which confirms our theories regarding the meaning of "time averaged"!

"Source based means averaged conducted output power measured directly from the transmitter module (this should be in the EMC test report). Time average means the average output power measured over the worst case duty cycle scenario.

For example, hypothetically say you have a transmitter with a test report that measured 30dBm (1 Watt) average conducted output power. Say your implementation is capable of transmitting for a maximum of 30 seconds over a period of one minute and this operation can only be repeated every ten minutes (always use the worst case scenario). So in this scenario, you are really transmitting a maximum of 5% of the time. therefore, 5% of 1W is your sourcebased time averaged output power."

The FCC isn't too interested in telling you how to qualify for testing exemptions. So the research continues.

"If an inherent property of the modulation or transmission protocol limits the maximum duty cycle of the
transmitter, the output power used for SAR determination may be reduced. If, for example, the
transmitter has an output power of 100 mW (+20 dBm) at 915 MHz but it is time division duplexed such
that it is active for only 50 mS out of every 100 mS, then the power may be calculated as 50 mW (+17
dBm). Without the source‐based average, the product would be above the SAR threshold; but once the
duty cycle is taken into account, the product drops below the limit."
